Bladder Botox Injections

Onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox) injected into the bladder muscle calms overactive bladder symptoms when other treatments haven't worked.

Bladder Botox (onabotulinumtoxin A) is an in-office treatment for overactive bladder and urgency incontinence. By relaxing the bladder muscle, it dramatically reduces the strong, sudden urges to urinate that interrupt sleep, work, and everyday life.

Who benefits from bladder Botox

Botox is most often used for patients who have not responded well to behavioral changes and oral medications, or who cannot tolerate the side effects of those medications. It is FDA-approved for adults with overactive bladder and is also used for neurogenic bladder.

How the procedure works

Treatment is performed in the office and takes about 15 minutes. After numbing the bladder with a local anesthetic, your urologist inserts a thin scope (cystoscope) and uses a small needle to deliver tiny doses of Botox to multiple points in the bladder muscle.

After the injection

You can resume normal activities the same day. Most patients begin to notice symptom improvement within one to two weeks, with full effect by week six. Results typically last 6 to 9 months, after which the treatment is repeated as needed.
