InterStim Therapy
Sacral neuromodulation that quiets miscommunication between the brain and bladder — a proven option for OAB and urinary retention.
InterStim therapy uses gentle electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves — the nerves that control bladder and bowel function — to quiet the miscommunication that causes urgency, frequency, and incontinence. It is one of the most effective options for patients whose symptoms have not improved with medications or behavioral therapy.
Conditions InterStim treats
- Overactive bladder with urgency or frequency
- Urge urinary incontinence
- Non-obstructive urinary retention
- Fecal incontinence (in select cases)
The two-stage process
InterStim is unique because you can try it before committing to a permanent device. The trial phase places a thin lead near the sacral nerve, connected to an external stimulator you wear for one to two weeks. If your symptoms improve significantly during the trial, you proceed to a brief outpatient procedure to place a small permanent stimulator under the skin in the upper buttock.
Living with the device
The implant is small and not visible. A handheld remote lets you adjust the settings. The current generation of InterStim is full-body MRI compatible and rechargeable, with a battery life of up to 15 years. You can return to normal activities, including exercise, within a couple weeks of the permanent placement.
