Urodynamics

A specialized in-office test that pinpoints the source of urinary symptoms by measuring how the bladder, sphincters, and urethra are working.

Urodynamic testing is a set of in-office studies that measure how well your bladder, sphincters, and urethra are storing and releasing urine. It is the most precise way to identify the source of complex urinary symptoms — and to make sure the right treatment is the next step.

When we recommend urodynamics

Your urologist may suggest urodynamics when symptoms are unclear, when prior treatments have not worked, or when surgery is being considered. Common reasons include:

  • Stress, urge, or mixed urinary incontinence
  • Frequency or urgency that does not improve with medication
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder or weak urine stream
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Voiding dysfunction following pelvic surgery

What to expect during the test

You will arrive with a comfortably full bladder. A nurse places a small, soft catheter to fill and empty the bladder while sensors record pressure and flow. The full visit usually takes 45–60 minutes; the active testing portion is 20–30 minutes. We talk you through every step and answer questions as we go.

After the test

Most patients drive themselves home and return to normal activities the same day. You may notice mild burning with urination or a small amount of blood in the urine for a day or two — drinking extra water helps. Your urologist reviews the results with you in a follow-up visit and walks through the next steps.
